How it Works

Reading Go! is a structured tutoring program for children in grades K–2 who need extra help learning to read. The program includes tutor training on reading science and a full curriculum for instruction.

Tutors are typically students from partner universities or classroom aides working in schools. A student is paired with a trained tutor for high-dose sessions, 30 minutes a day, 3 - 5 days a week. Sessions follow a progressive sequence of lessons in learning to read, reading, and writing. The five components of literacy are woven into each lesson. This highly regimented approach is aligned with the science of reading, introducing students to concepts in a sequence they can handle. The Reading Go! model has been validated through multiple randomized controlled trials and peer-reviewed studies. Tutors’ feedback data is monitored yearly, and materials are updated by academic advisors to reflect the latest research in reading science. The data shows that daily one-to-one and small-group instruction with strong fidelity to the Reading Go! routine is consistently associated with meaningful gains for young readers.

Testimonials

“I am so passionate about reading and lifting our students up, and this role has been so refreshing and gratifying because I get to be a part of the solution to the problem.”
— Anne-Lys Patton, P.S. 115 (Brooklyn)

“I love this program, I can’t say enough about it, I think it should be in every school.”
— Pablo Vargas, P.S. 43 (Bronx)

“I feel empowered. Just to be able to work with these kids and to learn their strengths...and to be able to focus on whatever they need. To have that one-on-one and the equipment and tools...it’s great.”
— Patrick Lindsey, P.S./I.S. 54 (Bronx)

“I love that I have gained a new skill from this experience. I can pull up a chair with a student and work directly with them, and this is a skillset I have now – a skill that I have for life and that I can take into the classroom with me. I am so thankful for the experience.”
— Lisette Ayala, P.S. 20 (Manhattan)
